"Sounds of Science"

Competition

****************************

No student accurately guessed the "Sounds of Science" audio files for 2008.  The Elementary sound was a Aeolian Wind HARP.  The Junior/Senior sound was a flux of high energy ions in solar wind as a coronal mass ejection travels by the STERO satellites.  We had several students get close with their hypothesis, but stopped submitting emails.  Because the interest seems to not be even on a scale of  moderate, I will probably discontinue this for 2009.  There might be a different type of contest but at this time, I am not sure.

The Louisiana Region 5 Science and Engineering Fair is conducting an experiment of its own.  Below are 2 sound  files of something specific.  One sound is for Elementary Division (3rd - 5th Grades) and the other is for Junior and Senior Divisions. These sounds could or could not originate on Earth.  The first student to accurately and precisely identify the sound, in their respective division,  will win a prize from the LR5SEF.  (If you are in the 3rd - 5th grades you can only offer guesses to the elementary sound.)  (If you are in the 6th - 12th grades,  you can only offer guesses to the junior/senior sound)  The contest will continue until someone guesses it or until March 15, 2008 (Date of 54th Annual Louisiana Region 5 Science and Engineering Fair), which ever comes first.. This contest is ONLY open to students who  attend schools that participate in Louisiana Region 5 Science Fair competition as well as enter, or will be entering, a project in their school fair.     Note to Teachers & Parents:  Please let your students/children research this solution on their own.  If we have a winner, I will notify all by way of this web page.  The winner will be presented the prize / award at his/her school (or mailed if you prefer).

Click on the speaker below and listen to the sound.  If you have a hypothesis as to what specifically the sound is then click on the e-mail icon below and e-mail me.  If your answer is incorrect then I will respond and let you know that it was incorrect.  Be sure to include Your name, your School's name and Teacher's name when submitting an answer.  You are limited to one answer per e-mail.  So, if you don't get it right the first time, then try again.  If you are a teacher and would like to collect names and guesses from your class and send them in via one big email, that will be ok.  I will evaluate each hypothesis and reply asap.

Sorry.......no hints.  :-(

What I can do on the return e-mail is, by way of the Celsius temperature scale, tell you if you are cold, lukewarm, warm, hot, etc., with your hypothesis.  0°C - would be freezing and 100°C would be boiling, or the correct hypothesis.  For example - If you are at the low end of the spectrum (extremely far off from the correct answer) I might reply that your answer is incorrect at (for example) 5°C.

Good Luck!

(If you are using a Windows based non-Mac pc, you might want to right click on the speaker and "Save Target As.." to save  the sound file to your pc so you can listen to it while offline.  If you are using a Mac, I believe you would mouse over the speaker, hold the button down, and then select "Save To Disk" from pop up menu)
